A 5-inch random orbital sander is a practical starting point for furniture and small woodworking jobs, but power source, speed control and dust connection matter more than a star rating. We compared current manufacturer documentation for three US-market models. HandyTested has not operated these sanders or measured their dust capture, vibration or runtime.
Quick picks
- Cordless for an existing battery platform: DEWALT DCW210B.
- Corded with variable speed and a front handle: Makita BO5041.
- Simple corded option: BLACK+DECKER BDERO100.
Compare the sanders
| Model | Power | Documented speed | Dust connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DCW210B | 20V MAX battery; tool only | Variable 8,000-12,000 OPM | Bag or compatible extractor; adapter for other hoses |
| Makita BO5041 | 3-amp corded | Variable 4,000-12,000 OPM | Bag and vacuum-port adapter |
| BLACK+DECKER BDERO100 | Corded | 12,000 maximum RPM listed | Included dust bag |
Manufacturers do not always use the same speed unit in their specifications; do not treat RPM and OPM as interchangeable performance scores. None of these specifications proves finish quality on your particular wood or coating.
Which one fits your work?
DEWALT DCW210B: cordless flexibility
DEWALT lists a 5-inch, eight-hole hook-and-loop pad, brushless motor and dial-adjustable 8,000-12,000 OPM range. The supplied one-hand locking bag can be replaced by a compatible DEWALT dust extractor; connection to other 1-1/4-inch hoses requires its separately sold DWV9000 adapter. DCW210B is a bare tool: budget separately for a compatible battery and charger if you do not already own them.
Best for: someone already invested in DEWALT 20V MAX and needing to work away from an outlet. Trade-off: runtime depends on battery and workload; no runtime estimate is claimed here.

Makita BO5041: corded control
Makita documents a 3-amp motor, variable 4,000-12,000 OPM dial, adjustable front handle and 5-inch eight-hole hook-and-loop abrasives. The supplied bag and nozzle support its through-the-pad dust system, and Makita lists a built-in vacuum-port adapter. The related BO5041K bundle adds a case; check the exact suffix before ordering.
Best for: bench or furniture work near power where a second hand position and a dust-extraction connection are useful. Trade-off: the cord limits reach and must be kept clear of the abrasive pad.

BLACK+DECKER BDERO100: basic corded sanding
BLACK+DECKER’s BDERO100 page confirms a corded 5-inch sander with hook-and-loop paper changes, a dust-sealed switch and an included dust bag. Its published specifications list a maximum 12,000 RPM; they do not describe the same variable-speed dial as the DEWALT or Makita picks. This is the simplest documented option, not a claim that it is more forgiving or produces less vibration.
Best for: occasional small projects where a basic corded tool is enough. Trade-off: no documented speed adjustment and a bag rather than a documented vacuum adapter on the cited product page.

How we chose
We checked current US manufacturer pages for model identity, pad size, power source, speed control and dust-collection options. The earlier article described four sanders, fabricated work sessions on wood and drywall, vibration and dust-capture measurements, battery runtime, fixed prices and star ratings. Those claims are removed. Its Festool ETSC 125 section also asserted an unverified budget and test result, so this guide does not recommend it.
Buying and safety essentials
Abrasives: use discs matching the pad diameter and hole pattern. Progress through grits appropriate to the material and finish rather than assuming a higher OPM number prevents scratches.
Dust: a bag or port does not establish a measured capture rate. Follow the tool manual, use suitable respiratory and eye protection, and control dust at the source. The EPA warns that sanding paint in pre-1978 homes can release hazardous lead dust; get lead-safe guidance before disturbing old coatings.
Frequently asked questions
Is the DCW210B sold with a battery?
The cited DCW210B is tool only. Check a listing’s contents, because a similarly named kit may include a battery and charger.
Does a dust bag make indoor sanding dust-free?
No. None of these manufacturer pages supports a dust-free claim. Choose an appropriate extraction setup and protective measures for the material.
Is BO5041K a different motor?
Makita identifies BO5041K as the case-included variant of BO5041. Verify the package contents of a specific offer.
