Kitchen Gadgets for Cooking, Temperature Checks and Food Storage

Affiliate disclosure: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Useful kitchen equipment solves a specific job. A multicooker, instant-read thermometer and vacuum sealer are not substitutes for one another, so a single “best overall” ranking would obscure what each does. We compared exact US models using manufacturer documentation and USDA food-safety guidance. HandyTested has not cooked with or laboratory-tested these products; retailer prices and bundles can change.

Choose by kitchen task

Model Useful for Main constraint
Instant Pot Duo 6QT Pressure and slow cooking, steaming, rice, yogurt Pressure-release procedure and counter space
TempPro TP19H Checking food’s internal temperature Probe placement and care
FoodSaver VS3130 Sealing compatible bags and accessories Consumables and proper cold storage

Instant Pot Duo 6QT: several cooking functions in one pot

Instant Pot lists seven functions for its Duo 6QT (SKU 112-0170-01): pressure cooking, slow cooking, sauteing, steaming, rice, yogurt and keep-warm. The six-quart pot and 120 V / 60 Hz specification are for the cited US model. It comes with a stainless-steel inner pot and steam rack, but the exact seller bundle should still be checked.

Best for: a cook who will actually use more than one cooking mode. Trade-off: it takes counter/storage space and requires learning the sealing, liquid and release rules. Never force a pressurized lid open or lean over the steam outlet. The manufacturer specifically advises against quick release for fatty, thick, high-starch or expanding foods such as beans; use the appropriate recipe and manual.

TempPro TP19H: check doneness with a probe

The TP19H is a folding instant-read thermometer with a rotating backlit display and motion-sensing wake. A thermometer reading is useful only when the probe is placed correctly and the target temperature is appropriate for the food. The USDA advises measuring the thickest portion and following its safe minimum internal temperature chart, rather than relying on color or texture alone.

Best for: regular checks during roasting, grilling and reheating. Trade-off: it is not a leave-in oven probe unless a manufacturer explicitly rates that use. Clean the probe as directed between foods, store the sharp tip safely and check calibration if readings seem inconsistent. Do not assume a marketing speed claim equals our own measurement.

FoodSaver VS3130: seal and organize portions

FoodSaver describes the VS3130 Premier as a heat sealer with a retractable handheld vacuum sealer, plus pulse and dry/moist settings. The relevant bag, roll or container must be compatible with the setting and accessory. Read the model manual for sealing procedure and cleaning before storing food.

Best for: portioning and organizing food destined for appropriate refrigeration or freezing. Trade-off: bags and accessories are recurring costs. Vacuum sealing is not sterilization and does not make perishable food safe at room temperature; follow food-storage and chilling guidance. Avoid treating advertised preservation periods as guaranteed results.

How we chose and what changed

We checked current manufacturer pages for precise model functions and consulted USDA temperature guidance. The prior article’s TOA-60 recommendation was removed because Cuisinart labels that model discontinued. Its Ninja BN701 text mixed model and Smart Torque claims; blending is covered in our dedicated guide. A generic sous-vide cooker and generic vacuum sealer were not sufficiently identified. These three recommendations solve distinct problems, not a tested quality hierarchy.

Food safety and buying checks

For cooked food, use the USDA safe-temperature chart and measure in the thickest part. Clean and separate raw-food equipment. Chill perishables promptly even after vacuum sealing. Check voltage, counter footprint, seller bundle, replacement bags and the exact model before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Duo 6QT also air fry?

No air-fry function is listed among the seven functions of the cited standard Duo. Duo Crisp is a different appliance with different parts.

Can TP19H stay in food while cooking?

Do not use it as a leave-in probe without explicit model-specific instructions. Insert it for a reading and follow the maker’s operating limits.

Does vacuum sealing replace refrigeration?

No. Perishables still need appropriate refrigeration or freezing and safe handling.
