A cordless impact wrench helps remove or snug large fasteners. It does not replace a calibrated torque wrench for final tightening. We compared manufacturer specifications for three exact 1/2-inch models by battery platform, anvil and package contents. HandyTested has not measured torque, runtime or durability. Retailer prices change; the old under-$300 promise is not a current buying guarantee.
Which impact wrench fits your work?
| Exact model | Manufacturer maximums | Package and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DCF921B | 300 ft-lb fastening; 450 ft-lb breakaway | Compact bare tool, hog ring; battery and charger extra |
| Milwaukee 2962-20 | 550 ft-lb fastening; 650 ft-lb nut-busting | Mid-torque bare tool, friction ring; M18 battery extra |
| RYOBI P262 | 450 ft-lb fastening; 600 ft-lb breakaway | ONE+ friction ring; verify tool-only versus kit offer |
These are manufacturer maximums, not measurements on your particular fastener. Breakaway/nut-busting and fastening figures describe different tasks; neither is the specified final torque for a vehicle or assembly.
DEWALT DCF921B: compact access
DEWALT lists the ATOMIC DCF921B with a 1/2-inch hog-ring anvil, up to 300 ft-lb maximum fastening and 450 ft-lb maximum breakaway torque. Four speed settings include Precision Wrench control and a timber-screw mode. The DCF921B box contains the wrench and belt clip; battery and charger are sold separately.
Best fit: an existing DEWALT 20V MAX owner who values compact access. Consider: impact-rated sockets and the battery/charger cost if entering this platform. DCF921B is not the DCF921P2 kit or the old DCF899P1.

Milwaukee 2962-20: mid-torque M18 option
Milwaukee’s 2962-20 is an M18 FUEL mid-torque 1/2-inch friction-ring bare tool. The official manual specifies up to 550 ft-lb fastening and 650 ft-lb nut-busting in the higher setting. It has bolt-removal and auto shut-off modes, but actual torque depends on battery charge and size, impact duration and fastener conditions. An M18 battery is not included.
Best fit: M18 owners seeking a middle ground between compact and high-torque chassis. Consider: the tool is not a calibrated final-torque instrument. The older article’s 2767-20 is a different high-torque model; its runtime claims do not transfer.

RYOBI P262: ONE+ platform choice
RYOBI identifies P262 as an 18V ONE+ HP brushless 1/2-inch impact wrench with a friction-ring anvil, three speeds and an auto mode. Its published maxima are 450 ft-lb fastening and 600 ft-lb breakaway. The manufacturer offers both tool-only and battery/charger configurations; inspect the selected offer.
Best fit: someone who owns compatible ONE+ batteries or wants to compare kit and bare-tool costs. Consider: do not substitute P261 or assume maximum torque and runtime for every battery or joint.

What changed and how we selected
The previous guide mixed DCF899P1 and DCF899HB, P261 and P262, and described BLACK+DECKER LGC120 as an impact wrench. BLACK+DECKER identifies LGC120 as a garden cultivator, so it does not belong here. Unsupported runtime, weight and torque assertions were removed. This comparison uses documented specifications and platform costs, not first-hand performance testing or a universal ranking.
Safe use and total cost
Choose an impact-rated socket of the correct size, wear eye protection and follow the tool manual. Start threads by hand to avoid cross-threading. For wheel hardware, follow the vehicle’s specified sequence and torque; finish with a hand torque wrench, not the impact gun’s setting. Include battery, charger and sockets in total cost and check seller authenticity.
Frequently asked questions
Does breakaway torque tell me final tightness?
No. It is a removal rating under manufacturer conditions. Final torque must be checked against the equipment specification with a torque wrench.
Is a battery included?
DCF921B and 2962-20 are bare-tool packages. P262 has multiple package choices; inspect the exact offer.
Is LGC120 an impact wrench?
No. BLACK+DECKER lists LGC120 as a cordless garden cultivator.
